North East India- "the seven sisters of the world" consists of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh (Earlier NEFA), Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram (Earlier Luchai Hills), Tripura and Meghalaya (Earlier Khasi and Jaintia Hills). Meghalaya, Arunachal, Mizoram was earlier districts of Assam making the state to big. The north of North East is China and Bhutan, East Myanmar ( Burma), so uth is Thailand and Bangladesh and in the west Bangladesh and West Bengal ( North Bengal). The mighty river Brahmaputra flows in the center as a life line of the north east India. One of the longest rivers in the world with high current. Also known as Mahabahu. The region is full of natural beauties and just a heaven on the earth. It is rich in civilization, culture, heritage, peace and bravery, never seen anywhere in the ancient Indian history. The region falls in the hands of Indian rule since 1826 Yandabu ceasefire with the British. Till then it was famous all over for temples, ancient Astrology (Jyotish) etc.To go back to 4000-5000 BC, it is:-
The mythological name “Kamrup” and “Pragjyotishpur” (ancient star of shining astrology) termed in the great epic Mahabharat, pauranic, tantric (black magic) literatures, Kalika puran, Vishnu puran etc. At that time the border was Bay of Bengal in the south, Kartoya river of present Teesta, Koshy and Mahananda river in the west, The region was then divided into four parts named as Kampith (Kartoyariver to Sonkox river), Ratnapith (Sonkox to Rupahee), Ivarnapith (Rupahee to Bharalee) and Saumarpith (From Bharalee river to Dikang). These four region was the largest in terms of civilization then.
The name Kamrup came after the rebirth of the Indian cupid “Kamdev”, who was burnt to ashes by Lord Shiva. That was the time when Shiva’s first wife Sati’s one of the organ fell on Kamagiri- now known as “Kamakhya” (the Goddess of sexual desire).
The region was although ruled by the Asur or Danab’s, they was pretty good one. The first known king of Kamrup was Mahirang Danab, followed by his son’s- Hatakaxur, Sambaraxur and Ratnaxur. Another Kirat king ruled was Ghatakaxur- who was slained by intelligent “Narakaxur.” Narakaxur was born to Vishnu in His pig incarnation and brought up by then king of Videha-King Janak. Narakaxur was a good engineer, architect and intelligent king. He was good worshiper to Lord Shiva and Vishnu. Narakaxur only reconstructed Pragjyotishpur as capital (now Guwahati), made settlements of many Brahmins in Kamakhya temple for prayers. Narakaxur Hills at Guwahati still remind him here. Narakaxur later become more closer to another Axur king, named Ban at Sonitpur (Now Tezpur). He proposed Kamakhya to marry and as per proposal agreement, he did constructed a road, a water tank and the temple on the top of Nilachal hills over night. But fearing al this goddess betrayed him with false morning alarm.
Agitated and frustrated Narakaxur then prevented Vasishtha muni for offering prayers at Kamakhya temple. The muni cursed both of them as “No one who worships at the shrine should see the fulfillment of desire.” However Lord Shiva helped to reduce the curse by 300 years. In course of time Narakaxur was slained by Lord Krishna in the next carnation. Krishna had tough time to fight in Kamrup and later took 16,000 girls, 14,000 elephant and horses to Dwaraka ( Gujarat).Krishna crowned Bhagadatta- the elder son of Narakaxur as king of Kamrup. King Bhagadatta fought the battle of Kurukshetra with pride in favour of Kaurav sitting atop his gigantic elephant and large contingent of troops
Other interesting story of Lord Krishna and his grandson occupied more in the “Shri Madbhagawat”.Lord Krishna fell in love with Rukmini, beautiful daughter of king Bhismak at Kundilnagar (Now Sadiya). He traveled all the way from Dwaraka to Kundil nagar to kidnap her. Still a temple exists although the original Kundilnagar merged with mighty Brahmaputra. The then horse foot prints could still be seen over the stones of Ashwaklanta of north Guwahati. The term called as Rukmini haran.
Lord Krishna’s grandson Aniruddha too eyed Kamrup. This time beautiful Usha, the only daughter of axur king Ban at sonitpur. Aniruddha was captured and the battle was heavy one with highest bloodshed. Finally lord Krishna intervened and ban was defeated. The present Tezpur termed after the heavy bloodshed. Still ruins of Ban capital exists in Tezpur. Even present Tezpur court building was once Ban’s palace. Tezpur still carry the glory of Ban kingdom with lot many temples, hills around. It’s a lovely hilly city over the mighty Brahmaputra bank.
Bhaluka- the grandson of Kumbhanda, the then prime minister of king Ban made his capital at Bhalukpung at the foot of Aka hills. Bhalukpung still exist with then beauties.on the present Arunachal Assam border. Bhalukpung is a beautiful tourist spot.
Later years since 11 century, the great warriors of Koch king Maharaj Naranarayan, Chilarai, Kachari kings ruled north bank of Bramputra.while in the south bank it was the strong Ahoms lead by “Sukapha” (Ahom kingdom from 1200 AD till 1826 AD).The last Ahom king was Chandrakanta Singha. During ahom period, the Assam or kamrup was frequently attacked by the Mughals. The kings of Assam never had western type weapons; it was guerilla warfare, sword, and night fight and al commando type activities to counter attack. The details are amazing. The historic battle fought was the Saraighat battle lead by brave warrior General Lachit Borphukan in March 1671 at Guwahati over river Brahmaputra. Then ahom king was Chakradhwaj Singh. Ahoms defeated Mughals once for all with bravery and surprise.
Guru Tegbahadur walk all the way from Punjab to Kamrup to take saint hood from Srimanta Shankar dev. Shankardev was having the genious super power, whos saints are from all the religion. He was attracted by the specified Guru"s from all over India. He was noted for peace and harmony which still exists in the region.Still this region of India dont have any religious conflict- all are united.
The heroes of Assam are endless till the war of independence with British in 1947. The glory of north east India shines the history. During the last Indo China war of 1962- the people of north east showed the best patriotism and sacrifice
